In January of 2017, there were an estimated 11.6 million women-owned businesses in the United States that employed close to 9 million people and generated almost $1.7 trillion in revenues, according to a 2017 report published by American Express.
However, between 1997 to 2017, women-owned businesses share of employment among all US firms only increased by 1% while the share of revenues declined from 4.4% to 4.2% respectively (based on the previously mentioned report). An indication as to the level of work and serious effort still required to address the factors negatively influencing firm-level performance among women-owned businesses.
To that end, we are pleased to announce today's launch of the Women Economic Empowerment Programme (WEEP). The first programme in State College, Pennsylvania lead by a private-sector company focused on helping growth-oriented women entrepreneurs expand their business.
In short, WEEP is a platform through which women entrepreneurs can access a collection of resources like expert business advice, training and solutions to help them reach new frontiers. In addition to providing enterprise support services delivered through Programme Tracks, which form the nucleus of WEEP. Support services that include business planning and strategy consultation sessions as well as on-site visits to provide recommendations on streamlining of business operations.
Looking to the future, the resources made available through WEEP will continue to evolve and new additions will be made in order to align with the ever changing business environment and needs of women entrepreneurs.
